The Railway Products of Baguley-Drewry Ltd and its predecessors

The origin of the Baguley concerns dates from Ernest Edwin Baguley's role as manager of Ryknield Engine Co Ltd at its Shobnall Road,Burton -on-Trent, motor car factory from 1902 until 1907.Major Baguley returned to the town in 1911, establishing Baguley Cars Ltd on the same site, to build both road and rail vehicles. He brought with him an agreement to produce petrol railcars for the Drewry Car Co Ltd, a London based concern which had developed the concept, but never built anything itself after 1909. Baguley road cars failed to sell in quantity in that highly competitive field but the Drewry railcars together with petrol locomotives made both companies successful for the next 10 to 12 years.Problems in the period up to 1930 brought about the end of the exclusive manufacturing agreement with Drewry.Baguley ventured into steam locomotive production after World War 1 when new markets had to be sought, but success was limited.Although steam was seen as the best hope for Baguley (Engineering) Ltd prior to the 1930 slump, it was not to be. A new company, E E Baguley Ltd rose from the ashes and made its way in the world with diesel and electric locomotives and general engineering, managing in the process to regain some of the Drewry work .This definitive work tells this complex and fascinating story.
