When his family moved to Northampton in 1955, a young Sydney Leleux was already keen on railways, but chance encounters with local industrial lines really fired his interst. Visits to nearby firms followed, with friendly but bemused staff wondering why anyone would be interested in what they considered everyday work items. The author turned detective, exploring and feeding back information about what were, at the time, unrecorded industrial railways to what would later become the Industrial Railway Society. Most importantly, he took photographs, although the earliest ones in the book are by his dad during a 1949 holiday in Dorset. Almost all the other photographs in the book are by the author, who always did his subject matter proud. The content reflects his movements, so it comprises Northampton 1955–1959, North Wales 1958–1963, North West 1959, London and area and Kent 1959–1961, North East 1960, Ireland 1960, South Wales 1961, and Northampton and Midlands 1961–63. There are section on service locomotives and makers’ plates.
