The Sunderland and Penshaw Railway DUE IN STOCK SOON

As with other railways on Wearside, the main reason for the branch from Penshaw to Sunderland was moving coal for onward transport by sea. When plans were made in the mid 1840s for a new dock on the south side of the River Wear, a line from Penshaw, on the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway, to the new dock made sense. To this end, the N&DJR purchased the Durham and Sunderland Railway.

The book traces its history from there, starting in typical Oakwood style with promotion and construction, then its absorption into the LNER and later British Railways, plus the Tyne and Wear Metro. It covers traffic and includes a short section on staff. The rest of the book is a copiously illustrated account of ‘Along the Line’, including Penshaw to Offerton Lane, South Hylton, Pallioin, Deptford and the Lambton Staiths, Millfield, Bishopwearmouth and Hendon.
