Sunrise Sunset UK Volume 9 - A Day at Banbury

Sunrise Sunset UK spends a full day at a busy and popular location, recording a typical day of passenger and freight trains.

On the Chiltern mainline, 70 miles north from London Marylebone and 42 miles south of Birmingham Moor Street is Banbury. Located in Oxfordshire, the station and surrounding area have been modernised in recent years and this section of railway sees a great number of loco-hauled trains each day. Served by the Class 68-hauled Chiltern Mk3 sets with a steady flow of freight, on the day of our visit, an incredible 38 loco-hauled trains passed in a 14-hour period!

Mixing it up a bit, the day starts just over a mile north of the station at Grimsbury Green with the stone loading terminal and four-track running. For the bulk of the day, action comes from the station with the evening peak filmed from Aynho Junction - an interesting split level junction - five miles south of Banbury.

Filmed on 9th July 2019, all five Chiltern loco-hauled sets are recorded plus a number of freight and engineers trains. Highlights included two Freightliner Class 70s on containers and two Colas Class 70s on engineers jobs. Various DBC, Freightliner and GBRf locos feature and then 66743+66746 appear with the Royal Scotsman! Add a few Chiltern, Great Western and Cross Country DMUs and the action from a typical day in summer 2019 is complete.
