Of the Southern ‘Big Tanks’ these were the only ones that could remotely be described as ‘conventional’. They were also the most numerous. Again, though, the job of these ‘London Tanks’ was highly specific – transfer work in and around and between the yards and sidings of the capital; their roots in the ill-starred ‘River Tanks’ saw that they did not venture on to passenger work. Like the Zs, they too found lasting attention after being drafted as replacements on the Exeter banking work. Prior to this they had rarely strayed west of Windsor, let alone Winchester!
