Review...

Harrogate Gas Works opened in 1848, and for nearly 60 years regretted the decision to build on a site at New Park, well away from the railway - the only logical means of transport for its raw material, coal. For over 30 years from the early, road traction engines were used, buteventually increasing production forced the issue, and a 2-foot gauge railway was built from the North Eastern Railway at Bilton Junction to New Park. Trains ran for almost 50 years, until the wheel turned full circle and the increasing efficiency of of road haulage took over again until the gas works closed in the early 1960s. This is the story of the transport systems of Harrogate Gas Works, which achieved a fame out of all proportion to its size. There are full descriptions of the road and rail locomotives, the rolling stock, andthe railway itself.
