Gerald Hubbock photographed mainly the South Wales main line between Llanharan and Ely,and the West of England main line from Cole to Whiteball,and those areas form the backbone of this book.To a lesser extent he as also active photographically at Bridgend, between Cardiff and Severn Tunnel Junction, around the Bristol, Gloucester and Cheltenham districts and towards Exeter.A very unusual aspect of his work was that he continued to visit the South Wales main line during the early years of the First World War, providing a unique record of traffic in period at a time when photography was frowned upon and film stock was scarce.He took up his camera again during the early postwar period, recording the final months of the GWR and the first of the nationalised concern.
