One of the success stories of the BR Modernisation Plan was the Brush type 4 class 47,but sadly many of these much loved machines have now been withdrawn as passenger services move to multiple-unit operation and freight haulage becomes dominated by the class 66 machines.Fortunartely some 47s remain and 47703 looks very smart in the Fragonset Railways livery of Black body with silver roof and red bodyside panel lined out in white. Introduced as D1960 in 1967,the loco has spent time in Scotland,Crewe,Eastleigh and Old Oak Common, and has carried the namesSaint Mungo,The Queen Mother and Lewis Carroll. It passed into the ownership of Waterman Railways but was noted dumped at the back of Crewe station on 11/4/96.It was moved to Crewe diesel depot in May 1996 and was officially put in store on 19 March 1997,before being sold to Fragonset Railways two months later. It is now based at Derby and has seen regular use between St Pancras and the East Midlands for Midland Main Line, who have suffered problems with the reliability of its HST fleet.
