7 May 2002 was rather wet and miserable so James and I were not out on the
hills and we had a leisurely drive to Aviemore, where the station
naturally came to my attention.
Originally built in 1863 for the Inverness &
Perth Junction Railway, the station was rebuilt by the Highland Railway
in 1892.The main building is a long, single storey structure, mostly of
wood,on the down side.An ornate cast iron awning, with finely decorated
wooden valances, runs the full lenght of the building. On the island
platform is a large waiting room block with a similar awning. The
easterly face of this platform is used by the preserved Strathspey
Railway, giving superb interchange facilities with Scotrail. The main
building is very well maintained and many of the rooms are used by local
retail businesses, making the station an important tourist attraction for
the non hillwalking visitors.
I was fortunate enough to be there just at the right time
to capture 158729 ready for departure to Glasgow Queen Street.Seen here
in the attractive, well maintained livery of Scotrail.these units, built
by BREL at Derby in 1989-90.These 90 mph units have proved very reliable
and comfortable and still operate many of the long distance semi-fast
workings over much of todays network.
